The flocked tree – secret garland revealed

UPDATE: I RESIDE IN CANADA, AND THEREFORE YOU MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO FIND THE SAME DUSTERS IN THE US. HOWEVER, SOME OF MY READERS HAVE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE FOUND DUSTER REFILLS AT TARGET- TARGET BRAND UP & UP 360 BRAND. HOPE THAT HELPS.

DUSTER OPTION ONE HERE

or OPTION TWO HERE

Hello friends! I hope you had a great weekend.
Christmas is only 10 days away…can you believe it?

I’m not sure about you, but it feels like these couple of weeks
have just flown by. I have been so busy with various things, that I
haven’t had time to really take in all the beauty of Christmas.

I am looking forward to next week, when we can just disconnect for a
bit and enjoy lazy mornings, delicious foods and the company of family.

But not before I share the crazy secret behind our flocked tree.
My Christmas decor usually evolves as I go along, but I do think of a theme
ahead of time as I like to collect items for it throughout the year.

So last year, I decided that in 2014, I wanted to
have a frozen tundra theme and include lots of fur.

While planning, I thought I had had the most brilliant, unique idea.
You know, the ones you think of in the middle of the night
and you think to yourself ‘no one has ever done this before’.
I was going to make a fur garland.

Well, I went ahead and bought the fur and was getting ready to make
it into a garland, when I saw one of my dear bloggy friends post this.

So much for my ‘unique, never been done before’ idea. The story
of a blogger’s life right? Well, I find that when we encounter these sorts
of scenario, it pushes us to think a little harder and out of the box…

Do you remember this other crazy idea I had last year? The one where
I made a fluffy wreath using Dollar Store dusters (see the tutorial here)?

Well the duster was sitting on the table nearby and suddenly the light
bulb went off. Why not use the dusters as a garland? I sadly took the
wreath apart and started to insert the dusters into the tree..and I loved it!

I drove to the Dollar Store and bought the entire display
of Microfiber Feather dusters
We took them apart and simply inserted
them into the crevices and gaps in between the branches.

See them there sitting all fluffy and perfect?

It works, no?

In the evening the tree glows beautifully…

…and it really looks like it’s filled with snow.

Here’s a photo I took during the process, just to see how the garland
photographed. You can see how I positioned the dusters and
how it really made the vision of my ‘frozen tundra’ come to life.

I have used similar method before using white feathered boas on my white tree.
So there you go…the secret revealed and
an example of thinking out of the box. :)
 I hope you have a great day…xo

I loved the tree usings the feather dusters. I immediately went out and bought some dusters to get ready for next year. Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas.

I went out and bought the 360 degree refills too. I have already taken my apart and am ready. I even ordered the fake snow from Amazon. I was thinking about putting my tree up and calling it a winter tree. Why didn’t Isee this before Christmas?

Dollar Tree now has them!! Went yesterday and there they were. Scrub Buddies 360 dusters. Snow white, feathery and lovely. If you can’t find at your local DT, you can order a case of 24, which gives you 48. These are small, so for a large tree, 48 May be a good number to have on hand. You can have them shipped free to your local store, too.

          • shley says

Do you think the quality is the same as the expensive ones on amazon? How did you remove the handle? thanks!!

          • Susan Reynolds says

I saw the Scrub 360 version at the dollar tree and they were short in length (less than 12 inches if I remember correctly) unless you attach the two… and they were more like cotton than microfiber. The dollar tree had a blue and white microfiber duster that is similar in texture to the ones on Amazon which are $6.99 each? I just got 10 on ebay from a chinese seller that are the same but they cost $2.99 ea free shipping. I received them within a few weeks so shipping time wasn’t bad. Now if only I can figure out how to remove the handles.

Bought a flocked tree this year and want to put a similar look together – love the white but I would like to know where to buy dusters – I’m in Canada and not sure what to look for.

thank you and look forward to seeing all your ideas.

          • Susan Reynolds says

CHeryl if you can’t find them in stores … you can try ebay. There is a store on ebay PJONLINE that sells them for $2.99 each. They shipped rather quickly too.

    • Colleen says

Hi, I found those dusters at Dollarama and bought a bunch. How do you take them apart? My dusters have a really thick wire we will have to saw through. Am I missing something? Is there an easier way?

I also just bought Sno-Bond. I will need to store this tree after Christmas, probably in a box. I’m hoping it isn’t a total disaster and that I can touch it up with Sno-Bond next year.

I love this tree! I saw the picture last Christmas and have already collected the decorations. I cannot wait to see our wintery Christmas tree!

What a wonderful idea! Lucy you are too cute!! I have one or two of those dusters for reaching those hard to get at places.
Yes I had also seen the fur cut into strips to make garland.
You give me much inspiration. My hubby saw your pillow with the beetle carrying the tree..So he suggested I paint him a pillow with his 49 ford p/u. That’s an upcoming post.

Hi Lucy, I am in awe, as not once did I think of a duster. You are amazing at repurposing. Thank you so much for sharing such a great idea and they look amazing on your tree. Blessings and smiles, Emilou :-)

I was wondering what you used…Thank you for sharing the secret! I have never actually like flocked trees, because they didn’t look natural, but your tree really does look like snow has gathered there naturally. Perfection.

Hmm it seems like your website ate my first comment (it was
extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying
your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any tips and hints for beginner blog writers?

    I’d definitely appreciate it.

I just wanted to thank you for two great things from this post. First, we are building a winter float for our company themed after “The Secret of the Wings” and needed a cheap and easy way to make the up-cycled old Christmas trees I collected from people to be covered with snow. This was an amazing idea! Secondly, your ad choice pop up at the bottom of my screen may annoy others but I really needed to buy more business cards from Vista Print and it was a GREAT coupon. Thank you again!

Hi Lucy, first time here and I have to get some dusters. Today! Heres my issue; which of the following dusters do I use? When I click on your link I get taken to Amazon that shows a fuzzy, woolly looking duster like the The Home Store 360 Duster. Your close up of the wreath looks more like the Two-Toned Microfiber Duster. Here’s a file for you to look at, hopefully you can un-confuse me. I hope I don’t confuse you in the process and that this file works. I’m a little rusty on my computer.

Your Christmas is stunning! The flocking is thik and pretty.I was wondering where you purchased that gorgeous flocked tree or if you flocked it yourself. I have been researching tutorials but haven’t found a permanent solution.

  19. Alaina says

I love your tree, and the great idea of the dusters. I found the dusters at my local dollar store, i was just wondering how many you purchased to fill your tree to look like that?

  20. Francis says

OK well, I can’t believe how many pictures of Christmas trees you put on here and I thought it was about the wreath I had to scroll way too much you need to fix up your blog a little bit better thanks

hi, just wondering what brand of dusters you used for this? or what dollar store chain you got them? i also reside in canada

    • Susan Reynolds says

Update: I just took a hammer to the plastic handle (smashed it while held against pavement) and it came off easily.

  24. Kathy says

I found some microfiber dusters at the Dollar Tree. (Scrub Buddies 360 – they are in a BOX You get two in a box, but they are smaller. The two together, probably equal one of yours, in length! Here is a link, if you want to add it to your options above. https://www.dollartree.com/The-Home-Store-Static-Dusters/p321306/index.pro?cm_mmc=Product+Feeds-_-Google-_-n%2Fa-_-110932&gclid=CjwKCAiArrrQBRBbEiwAH_6sNHQg13kwSqAaa3cHqip_5e35zTNOCPlybbhsqRYiIoTQW8v9JEvscBoCGxUQAvD_BwE ) I am SO excited to being adding this “snow” to my tree this year!!! I have a few questions. I was wondering how you layered? Did you decorate the tree first, and then put the dusters/snow on? Or, did you put the dusters/snow on, and then add your bulbs, and other things?? Do you keep the snow mostly at the tips of the tree branches while placing?? Also, how many do you end up using on your tree! I am trying to decide if I should go back and buy more!!! ROFL!!! (I have a 7.5 ft. tree) Keeping my fingers crossed that mine turns out half as beautiful as yours!!! You are SOOOO inspiring! Thank you for sharing with us!!!

Hi! Did you add extra lights to your tree because the dark photos show that the tree has a massive amount of light, which I love. I bought a flocked tree last year and the lights weren’t LED but they were still very soft…not much glow.
