Spring Mantel 2012

Hello sweet friends!  How's your week so far?

I spent all day thinking today was Wednesday, and it wasn't until I was doing my weekly lunch menu for the kiddies that I realized I was a day ahead.  Perhaps it's because this is a short school week for the kiddies as they start their March (Spring) break on Friday.

On a positive note, the sun has been shining bright over the last couple of days, although that's somewhat deceiving given we had an extreme cold warning alert on Monday.  Sadly, there are no signs of sprouting trees just yet...

...so I decided to bring a little green into our home and set up my Spring mantel.  While I love the freshness of it, I think I may have skipped Spring all together and made it too summery. What do you think?

I decided to plant a few ferns in inexpensive glass jars I have saved or bought at our local thrift store.  Using varying shapes and sizes, uneven numbers and varying heights adds interest to the display.  I particularly love the lime green deer moss I purchased at a nearby nursery.

TIP: Due to the lack of drainage of glass jars, place a layer of gravel followed by a layer of sand prior to adding the potting soil as this will help to keep the roots from drowning.

And of course, you can't have a
Spring mantel without a little birdie...

I have always loved pressed plants or flowers.  I love to bring ferns and ivy from our family nature walks and press them to preserve not only the beauty of summer, but memories of time spent together.

I simply attached the plants to a music sheet with a little piece of tape.  These are great to fill in the empty spaces on the mantel.

An old looking cage cloche sits on a pile of books, because it wouldn't be a Craftberry Bush mantel if it didn't have old books....

or a little turquoise in the mix...

While happy with the mantel, I'll likely tweak it a little to make it more 'Springy' and then again for Easter.  In the mean time, I hope you like it and you can draw a few ideas from it.

In other news....
Isabella's room is coming along great.  It's taking a little longer than anticipated because my sweet husband takes my design advise literally and has added several 'surprise' details to the mix.  I am so happy with the way it's coming along....I'll give you a little sneak peak later on this week...:)

Well my friends, thank you for stopping by and allowing me to share a little Spring with you.  I hope to see you again soon.

much love,
Lucy

ps.
I wanted to thank those of you who have entered the Pleated Poppy giveaway and remind those who have yet to enter that you still have time to do so.  Go here to enter and good luck...xo

  4. I'm really liking the greenery and don't think it's summery at all. I love the moss - it's my favorite part of the whole mantel. Confidence, dearest friend. No double mindedness allowed. You have a beautiful heart and nothing less than that beauty shows in all you create. xxoo

  6. stunning, lucy.

i love that you have the binding of the books facing away. i will be "borrowing" that idea.

all of the green is not summery at all.

today jackson {monkey} and i saw the very first signs of spring: my perennial chives in the garden sprouting up. it was also a balmy and unexpected 70 degrees here in chicago today.

our trees seem confused, as buds are already popping.

i need to get going on our spring decor, but my "mantel" {glorified cabinet} is covered with baskets that need to be sorted.

sigh. thanks for the lovely eye candy.
