The chair that ruined my birthday...well the morning part...

Hello again guys!  I know...two posts in one day.  But today is my birthday and I pampered myself to a day with no chores.  Well, I did do some laundry, but it has yet to be put away and the beds are made because I would otherwise go insane.  But other than that, I took the day off from house work.

I worked on this chair that has been killing me softly.  You see, on my earlier post today, I showed you my first chair redo and even though I was happy with it at the time, it did feel as if something was missing.  Go here if you missed it.

Most of the feedback I received from you was that it did need some sort of back to it.  So I decided to cover some foam with the same fabric (painter's drop cloth) and leave it plain, yet there was no cohesiveness between the top and the bottom.

Sooo...I decided to paint a small Union Jack on the back to tie it all in, but I'm still not entirely in love...

Here is the before, and another before, and the after...

I really like the lines and I love what it represents,
I also like how it looks against the dark floor...

and like everything else, when staged with
nice accessories it starts to look much better....

So for now, I am leaving it as it is...until tomorrow when I will probably decide to take the back off and try something different.

What do you think?  Am I getting any closer?  This chair has taken over my day and ruined my good birthday mood...:(  But that's OK because my day starts now; my mom has made a delicious meal and its waiting for me at her house.  Hooray for being able to start over!

Thanks for coming by twice in the same day and listening to my nagging...!

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

much love,
Lucy

  2. Hi :) HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

How about if the back was left as-is except with a red or blue edging/piping? To kind of separate the natural color of the cloth and the white of the chair? Just a thought - I really like it :)

  7. Well Happy Birthday! I think the chair turned out great. Perhaps you could paint the piping around the top the same pretty red used in the flag... I think it may tie everything togeather.

  8. OMG I can't believe you don't love this. It's amazing. A red cushion or bolster might tie the two parts together.

    I adore it!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

  14. Susan said: Happy Birthday! My suggestion is to add red or blue (or both) piping to the upper part of the chair to coordinate with the colours of the Union Jack. You have done a wonderful job transforming this chair! (Sorry I have to post anonymously as Blogger won't let me post!)

  16. Just got this and I'm looking at the chair and I think I've got it...Love what you did with tying in the flag - good job. There is a good bit of red in the center of the back - that too is good. But, you are right, something was missing from the back and I think it's your cording going around it. Right now it's the same color as the material - blah. How about making the cording the same blue in the flag? I think that would really make it pop and it would be more cohesive. Looking forward to see what you finally end up with.

  18. Happy Birthday! I think I would do the same design on the back but make it bigger or perhaps make a border around the symbol. I know, sometimes there is just something not quiet right but think of all that you have learned to do!

  20. I love what you did with the chair but... I would have done the back exactly the same as the seat. All Union Jack or left the back plain off white. You've given me a great idea and now I'm going to do a Union Jack chair or New Zealand Flag chair too... Wonderful!

  21. I think the piping idea is good :)
Or maybe a white mesh in the gap at the back would be nice. \i love the seat with the white, maybe just a bit more detail would give you that final look you're hoping for. x

  22. What about image printing onto the natural fabric, perhaps by running it through your printer? You could keep with the england/london or royal theme. Perhaps big ben? or the queens shilloute like found on stamps and coins?
I think it needs something bigger on the back, but not nesscerillay more colour.

  23. Happy birthday! I think it looks good! Maybe the problem you are having is that it looks too sharp. I it was a little faded and maybe stained with some of the blue on the edges to give a distressed look you would like it. Still is fine the way it is.

  24. This is beautiful and so unique. I love it. But...if I were to change something about it, I'd "dirty" up the arms and legs of the chair. The pristine white of the wood doesn't jive with the organic feel of the upholstery. I would lightly glaze it. Just my two cents. I do think it fabulous, though! :) Happy belated b'day.

  26. Hi, I have only just discovered your blogs and am loving your ideas, thank you so much.

I do agree with you that the back needs something else and you may have already done something with it by now ( I am jumping all over your site so may have missed it!). With this years jubilee celebrations and the fact that it is a fine looking 'throne', how about adding one of the ER symbols from the top picture here: http://creativeroots.org/2011/05/royal-mail%E2%80%99s-royal-symbols/

The one with the crown in the centre would look great under the Union Jack on the back, or (if the seat back is symmetrical and can be turned upside down) the the one with the crown above the initials would look good above the Union Jack.

I hope this helps and please keep up the great blogs and tutorials.

    Suzy
